I like this book, but there is absolutely one thing that irked me, and it's that Charlotte Bronte, is the author of Jane Eyre, not Emily. Emily wrote Wuthering Heights, and though it's also quite famous, I found that Charlotte's writing is far better than her sister's and had to post this error. Anne Bronte wrote Agnes Grey. This is not why I took off one star, however. I think this is a great starter's guide to writing, but it's not something that hasn't been done in self-help writing books. The examples are good for those who need them to connect the ideas to on another, and this was a great way to visualize structure.
This is an excellent guide to looking at writing effectively to a commercial market. The title is about erotic romance, but that is just one genre, and most of what is in this book could apply to any kind of fiction.VERY well worth the time for any aspiring author.
Can't tell you how many times I've recommended it. If you are someone who wants to learn to write short stories, romance, or even marketing copy, this book is for you. I recommend it to all of my copywriting students to help them improve their storytelling abilities, and to learn the logical flow of actions. An excellent and highly under-rated book. Order it now!
This book covers just about everything for writing fiction. It is written in the most down to earth, frank tone. After reading this you will be able to write a decent story and edit any story that you have written. If you are like me a person with a million ideas but no idea how to tell a story this book is the answer!
More depth to this book than you might expect. I recommend this to anyone interested in writing good smut, as well as just a regular love scene.
This is a great place to start for someone who is new to the erotic romance genre, or an established author wanting to learn some new tips or tricks.
I've had this book for a couple of years. It is fabulous. It's really good for anyone, not just erotica writers. The author condenses everything she's learned about writing into one easy-to-read guide. She covers all the basics: character development, plot arcs, avoiding Mary Sue and Too Stupid To Live heroines, dialogue tags, the works. I've never read her books (her genre isn't my cup of tea) but from the bits I read in her book and on her blog, she seems really good.If you're just starting out in writing erotica (or anything else, really), this book is perfect. My one complaint would be that after looking at other how-to-write-erotica books, I think there is definitely more to be said on the subject than this book has in it. I'm thinking about buying the books by Angela Knight and also Alison Kent, as I've heard really good things about both. The Alison Kent book looked really thorough in the table of contents. But I've not yet read either one, so I can't say if they're good or not. So my recommendation would be to definitely start with this book, and then check out some others, whichever ones work for you. But for sure, with this one you can't go wrong, and it's priced well, too.The best part about this book is---it's NOT boring! A lot of how-to-write books are, but this one gets right down to the nitty gritty. No long-winded "history of erotica" or other filler that most people skip right over. Everything in this book is there for a reason. It takes all the good tips and advice that you'd get from a dozen or more other writing books, and puts it all in one place. It's definitely nothing but "good parts". I recommend this book so often, I should ask Morgan Hawke to make me her affiliate. LOL.
A good overview of the writing process, with explanations of components of stories. Premises, concepts, protagonists, villains, character arcs, plot arcs, and things like that. The kind of stuff you'd cover in college fiction writing class. Also a few tips and shortcuts for getting started and making sure the story conforms to what publishers are looking for. However, there are a few places where the terminology and examples become overwhelming and a bit confusing. At one point in particular, when discussing premise, the author writes, under the heading PREMISE: WHAT THE STORY IS TRYING TO SAY, "In the movie The Matrix, the message the story was trying to get across was 'Question Reality'. That was the premise."A mere one sentence later, we get a new heading: A Premise is NOT a MESSAGE.Uhhhh.... hmmm.I'm sure there is some way the author, with her years of experience as a professional writer, would explain her way out of this apparent contradiction, and she'd likely be right (somehow, I guess). Still, to a person just trying to get started writing fiction, you can see how this would muddy the mental water significantly.Anyway, I'd still recommend it. I've gotten a lot out of it.
