Let me explain:To buy into the plot, we have to presume that the animal kingdom joins the apes and overthrows all humanity and is in charge of Earth. Mind you, I LOVED Planet of the Apes. That seemed almost possible in some distant eon in the future.Horses, and mules and all the other critters, though? Sorry, I just couldn't get my head around the concept.Otherwise, though, the writing is smooth and well-edited. A quick, easy read.BLUSH FACTOR: This tale is free of profanities and is suitable for all ages. Bad, bad and worse! I am going to delete this book immediately from my library. A complete waste of my time. I truly think I could do better than this.

In a nutshell, this is an adorable tale of a horse and her girl. It's also a chilling examination of the horrors man has visited on the world and in some ways more importantly... On each other. Man as an animal, as observed by other animals.

I dislike the fact that you seemed to think I ordered this item.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's one of the few times that a story starts in media res (sp?) and I don't necessarily need to know what happened before or what happens after. It was well written and engaging. Without getting too political one way or another, the overall theme made some very valid arguments. I would recommend this as a short story discussion for high school students, college students and lower grades whose parents don't mind something a little different for their students.

Smiley has created a world in which animals oversee humans to keep them in check. Only one human tries to convince the animals that humans are worth keeping alive, but the human males' aggression and desire to reclaim the Earth they despoiled--as well as dominance over animals and females--put human's continued existence in jeopardy. A thought-provoking read.

The animals are now in control of an Earth devastated by pollution and global warming. Do they want to exterminate humans?If this had been a fable, I could have bought the premise that all the (surviving) animal species get together in a parliament to discuss the fate of humans.However, the story was too individual to really work as a fable- and so the underlying premise did not cohabit comfortably with the narration; the more realistic one tries to make a Parliament of Animals, the more insane the whole concept gets... but without that, the story as written makes no sense.This awkwardness made it hard for me to read, even though it's short.

To think that I was worried that I wouldn't enjoy this collection. True this is the first story that I've listened to so far, so not a fair sampling yet, but I really loved this powerful fable... And the narrator Bahni Turpin was the perfect choice to tell us of Plucky' fate...
