John has several books, each of which tell a very different and unique story. They are exceptionally well written, each nearly impossible to put down. He fills each with great advice on nearly everything sailing, including tips on what makes a good boat, critical elements of safety at sea, storm tactics, and on - transforming my thinking about such matters.

I couldn't put this book down. Read it in one day. Outstanding in many ways. Excellent writer. A voyage of innocence with the ultimate rite of passage. It's a real book about a real guy on a real quest. You can't make this stuff up. Well done John. Keep writing and keep sailing

If you are a sailor, or love sailing, this is an interesting read. Despite the pitfalls any voyage entails, and the amount of support required for this type of effort. the accomplishment stands on it's own. Sailing 'East to West' around Cape Horn in a 32 foot sailboat. That fact alone makes it worth reading.

I loved Flirting with Mermaids. In Cape Horn to Starboard, Mr. Kretschmer's voice is a little too impatient and doesn't show the levity and depth of understanding that you get out of Flirting with Mermaids. If you're a lover of sailing books you should give it a read, but if you haven't read Flirting with Mermaids, I'd say to read that first.

This is his first, and still one of his best. Can't wait till he publishes another book. Love Kretschmer! He's becoming one of my very favorite authors, and I am going to try and go sailing with him some day!!!

This was a great little book on rounding the horn and also the last leg of about 6000 miles was great.

A fun read for me. The book focuses on the many challenges involved in such a long haul sail. I found the comparison between Kretschmer's experience in Gigi and the clipper ships to be especially interesting.

Great writer. Lots of useful tips if buying a boat or preparing a boat for blue water.
