Whilst not being literary genius, the basic story is enjoyable and I would have rated it 4 stars. However, I removed one star for the appalling editing - for example: incorrect character names, bad grammar and reference to characters being part of a conversation when they have left the room. Now for my pet hate and the reason for another lost star "another thing coming" instead of "another think coming".Why oh why do so many people get this wrong? The way it goes is: if he thinks this, then he's got another think coming. Get it? It's not that hard. By halfway through the book, the editing errors were distracting and ruined my enjoyment of it. I'm not sure if I will read any more in the series, I'll wait until my irritation fades and then decide.If you enjoy a lightweight mystery and aren't bothered by bad grammar or missing words, you will enjoy it.

I read a great number of mysteries. A great number of those are historically set. Most of those seem to be set during the regency, the late Victorian era, and the 1920's. This story has potential to become one of my favorites. The characters are well drawn and very likeable. There is no unnecessary violence or sexual behavior because none is needed. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys the 1920's and strong intelligent female protagonists.

Loved the well thought out plot and pace of this book and have ordered the next one. I did, though, find several things off-putting. 1) Poor proof reading, several missed words and wrong spellings. 2) incorrect use of English as it was spoken by aristocratic English people in this era. Ño one of this class would use words like vittles, or booze, neither would they call each other 'luv'. These are only examples, but they and others almost put me off finishing the book. However, I am glad I persevered with it as it's a great story. Looking forward to the next chapter, but I strongly suggest you employ an editor with knowledge of the English language of the period as used by the aristocracy. I myself have edited several books for friends and realise the importance of correct idiom. Sorry, that sounds pompous, please excuse me, it is unintentional!

I really enjoyed the story and the characters. This was a very fast, enjoyable read.However, the book needs major editing!On several consecutive pages, whole paragraphs are out of order. Throughout, words are missing, wrong words are used, etc.I would have given this a strong 4 stars, but I can’t with such poor editing. It’s a shame. The book deserves better.

I’m really trying hard to like this book, but the horrible editing is making it next to impossible. As others have said, missing words, incorrect characters being attributed to dialogue, misused pronouns, the list goes on. I think I may like my $4.99 back. I feel sorry for the author. I am reluctant to try another book.

Stuck at home a few days sick, I happily binge read the first two books in the Violet Carlyle series. Can't wait until Murder at the Folly is available. The author hits all the right notes for a "cozy" and over the first two books, great character development.

I highly recommend this book and I can't wait for the next book in the series. It is a cosy, historical mystery. Showcasing a time and lifestyle that only exists in books and movies now. The mystery was light, but the characters engaging and colourful.

Good for a couple of hours reading. Just switch of your mind and enjoy the story. As is the case for many "British" whodunnits, it's not written by a British person and it shows. Not many of these authors think about how people would speak in the period they're writing about, let alone what would be socially acceptable behaviour. But if you can ignore that, the story is perfectly okay.
