A plot full of twists, outrageous behavior, humor and suspense. I laughed out out, I gasped out loud, and I do believe I even said, "Oh, no he didn't!" quite loudly while reading this fun mystery very reminiscent of Fatal Shadows. The author explains the fact it was written along the same time, previously pubbed under another name, and yes it has similar characters, similar dilemmas, and a very similar feel. But Murder In Pastel has a humor and a plot tornado all of its own! It's a Who Dunnit, with a list of possible suspects a mile long, and plenty entertaining along the way. I always love it when one is able to sneak art history into a plot, the whole setting of a California artist colony of the 60's to present is a treat for me. I thoroughly enjoyed Murder In Pastel, it was a book I had to read from start to finish. I only got four hours of sleep last night...so five stars form me baby!

How do you feel when your father walked away from you ten years ago and never came back? What must it feel like when the village of colorful eccentrics who more or less raised you all suddenly become suspects in a vicious murder? How does it feel when the man you had a secret crush on as a teenager suddenly returns – with his gorgeous new boyfriend? For Kyle Bari it feels like nothing more or less than a broken heart. Again.First written back in the 1990s, “Murder in Pastel” already shows Josh Lanyon’s mature voice as a writer, even before she became Josh Lanyon. In Kyle Bari, we witness the birth of the smart, sardonic, fragile man who would eventually become Adrien English. We enjoy evidence of Lanyon’s gifts as a storyteller and creator of richly developed characters from the beginning of her long, illustrious career as the doyenne of m/m fiction. With its intentional Miss-Marple-like small-town claustrophobia and lush sense of place, “Murder in Pastel” sucks us into this tight-knit band of artists, gradually peeling away the affectionate surface to find the conflicts and anguish within. For Kyle Bari, who has all but sealed himself off from any hope of love, it is the reopening of old wounds to watch his makeshift family begin to fall apart around him as jealousy and suspicion start to corrode the bonds that have held them all together for decades. When Josh Lanyon started her career as the master of this genre, there were few who could rival her skill at tale-spinning and her talent at writing. These days, she’s far from alone, but the voice she has made her own over the past years still shines out. She is still the one to beat.

Kyle Bari is content with his life. He has come to terms with his father’s disappearance ten years ago. His disappearance and the disappearance of his legendary masterpiece, Virgen in Pastel, remains a mystery. Then, his neighbor, Adam MacKinnon returns with his new lover, Brett. Brett has a way of getting under everyone’s skin. Soon, hostility is the name of the game. And it gets worse as Brett hints he knows something about the disappearance. Then the painting is discovered and a few a days later, Brett is murdered. The Author’s Note at the end sheds quite a bit of insight into Murder in Pastel. It is thoroughly enjoyable story but there are similarities to other books by Josh Lanyon. Kyle needed a bit of a shakeup. He was not really living but just existing for some time. His father’s disappearance affected him as well as others in town. Brett’s arrival seems to be the catalyst causing all the lives and lies to come tumbling down. How intertwined the small town turns out to be! Captivating from beginning to end, pick up Murder in Pastel and watch for similarities and differences. You will not be disappointed.

At the end of this book Mr. Lanyon explains a little about this book. I believe he said something to the effect that this was a story he had done earlier and yet hung on to it. But he liked the story so he kept it. And I'm glad he did because its lovely and thru his talent of capturing a place I really felt I was there amongst the characters. I know that place even tho I've never been there. And, as he also says, at the same time he was working on Murder in Pastel he was also writing Fatal Shadows (which is the first of the Adrienne English stories). So, anyone who is a fan of Adrienne English will immediately note all the similarities between Kyle and Adrienne. And that's fine - I love the character of Adrienne and I've read most of Mr. Lanyon's work and he's obviously very partial to that type of character (witty, sarcastic, handsome, a little wounded, curious, etc). But this was a great little story all on its own and I encourage anyone who likes a good plot and wonderful characters to pick this one up.

I would give it five stars, but I'd already read the more recent book which took ideas from this one. Still, Mr Lanyon can't write a bad story Loved it, and would highly recommend it.The secondary characters are well developed, and the setting is as real as the main characters. Minor issues: not so sure I liked Adam, the love interest - he seemed detached, and his interest in Colin came across to me as something composed more of convenience and proximity than a deeper, older love. Brett was irritating and mean. I couldn't believe Colin would let Brett take advantage of him, putting up with the nasty, sniping comments, and still like him in spite of his reprehensible behavior.
