Nancy R. Mitchell is an established protocol and etiquette consultant and advisor with more than 35 years of experience in the field. Currently, she is an adjunct faculty member at the George Washington University, Washington, DC, where she developed and teaches protocol courses in the School of Business and Public Management's Event Management Certificate Program. For more than two decades, she served as director of special events and protocol at the US Library of Congress, the world's largest library and cultural center. In her position there, Ms. Mitchell and her staff coordinated the institution's major special events, visits of heads of state and other dignitaries, fundraising galas, conferences, and meetings. As the Library's chief protocol advisor, she served as liaison to the White House, the US Department of State, Congress, the Supreme Court, and other government agencies, embassies, academia, and corporations.   Ms. Mitchell owns The Etiquette Advocate, a firm providing etiquette and protocol training and consulting to corporations, non-profit organizations, government agencies, embassies, universities, and the travel and hospitality industry. She is quoted on matters of etiquette and protocol by CNN, ABC Nightline, Martha Stewart Living Radio, The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Washington Business Journal, the Associated Press and Washingtonian magazine, and has been featured on ABC Good Morning America, Fox News, and National Public Radio. I bought this from Nancy, the author, on the spot at a DC book event at the National Press Club. I picked it up and started to read and immediately realized that this is not your parents' etiquette book. It's very holistic. More about how to make sure that others are comfortable around you (and in doing so become more comfortable in your own skin). There's a strong self-help vein in the presentation. Not a book about table settings and white gloves.I like this book. And I can also say that the author has taken her advice to heart -- I walked away from my encounter with her feeling good. Which is the whole point, right?

This amazingly comprehensive and accessible etiquette guide is what America needs now to become civil again!Equally useful for men and women, it offers practical, straightforward guidance on a broad range of everyday social situations, from dining to forms of address—and appropriate dress—to events, job relations, neighborly relations, and behavior in public gathering places. People skills and contemporary social media behavior are covered as well.The organization of the book helps you get what you need immediately, plus there is a helpful index. (As a librarian, I totally appreciate these features.) Having suffered through some of the stuffy etiquette books of the past, I find this Field Guide to Modern Manners to be a breath of fresh air! I bought it because of the title. I teach young girls in the Houston area etiquette and was curious because of the title saying Modern Manners. I find it goes along with what I have been teaching all these years and has given me a few ideals of new stuff to add to my teachings. Great book. Too bad everyone does not own a copy. Might make for a more pleasant world.

I picked this book up out of curiosity - I half expected it to be outdated and inapplicable to the average person's everyday life but I was pleasantly surprised!The book covers good manners in pretty much every situation you're likely to encounter in your day to day life - work, parties, networking, eating, meeting new people. It even had a brilliant tip for eating out when you have severe food allergies (call the restaurant in advance and arrange a suitable meal to save awkwardness at the time. GENIUS.).The chapters are laid out logically and there's a handy index at the back if you're looking for something in particular. The pages themselves are bullet pointed and have handy summaries for useful facts, which keeps it relevant and easy to read.It covers a lot of very basic rules that seem obvious to some as well as more specific rules such as how/when to send Thank You cards, what different dress codes mean and office etiquette. I think this should be a staple on an HR department bookshelf and would make an excellent gift for an older teen about to enter the wider world.*thank you netgalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review*

The beginning of the book is confusing. The authors mix personal care, appearance and grooming with etiquette. The ideas are from the 1950s and confuse not using vulgarity with etiquette also. Not being vulgar is a lifestyle choice and, of course, is rude and insulting, but most vulgar people never heard the word etiquette. Keeping one's body and clothes clean and stylish is good personal care and shows mental fitness, not etiquette. I stopped reading after this misinformation, not wanting to add mental insult to injury. Buying this book is a waste of money.
