This book is written on about 8th. level. The information could have been written on 20 pages. I underline as I read new info. What I found was repetition of info., which is good for reinforcement if the material is new but not otherwise. I f you want the science behind different foods and their effects on the body buy Paleo Principles. Its author, Ballantyne is a scientist and studied beyond her PH.D for four years to write the book.
This is such a quirky book that I have been stumped by rating it. Was it a 4-star book because of the odd dialogues or a 5-star book because of its solid and current information about gut flora, prebiotics, and inflammation? But, the yummy cold potato recipe... Okay, honestly, that one tipped the rating. These Irish genes don't allow for me to abandon potatoes which, as it turns out, are a source of an important prebiotic, resistant starch. Other topics include glycation of protein from cooking at high temperatures* and natural anti-inflammatory foods.Beyond the cold potato recipe, so important because of its resistant starch, this is a book filled with wise information about healthy eating and trying to minimize inflammation through diet. I have celiac disease, an autoimmune disease in which exposure to gluten significantly damages the small intestine, and can cause chronic inflammation, malabsorption, and dysbiosis that impacts your entire digestive tract. Many celiacs suffer from inflammatory bowel disease, as well. Even without an autoimmune disease, your whole GI tract can be unhappy when you have the wrong bacterial microbiome and that unhappiness can cause inflammation, and make you more prone to metabolic syndrome or diabetes type 2.This book explains in layman's terms how and why to eat better. It's a good starting point for anyone with a New Year's resolution to change the way they eat.*If you want to cook protein in a safer way, check out sous vide methods!
This is a stunningly gorgeous tome. OK, all of the information may not be new, but for me it is not about that. It is a lovely gift for folks who do not know a lot about this, and is beautiful as a stand-alone. Perfect for introducing someone to these ideas. Would look lovely on a coffee table. pages are designed well for reading, not at all cluttered and any side bars are nicely integrated. It is a real class act. Lovely photos and metallic gold accents. The photos do not do it justice!
I got this book on my Kindle and liked it so much that I bought the hard copy. It is very well researched, informative, and written in a conversational style. The conversational style helps a lot when reading some of the drier, albeit useful information. There are some recipes, but it is mostly about how and what we should eat, and why.
Still finishing up this most interesting book - lots of information that I had not seen before!
This book opened my mind to the gut- everything connection! I drink the welcome shot everyday now, and follow much of the dietary changes daily. Everything that was explained in this book made so much sense to me about what I've been going thru putting my gut and body thru and I began to feel and function better after just a day or two! Very good starting point to begin understanding how central and important gut health is to everything our bodies do and need.

These folks are bloggers, so I guess the chatty tone of the book should have been expected. I like the information, but the chatty tone didn't do anything for me. As another reviewer said and like many books these days, it's written at about the 8th grade level. I would have been really annoyed if I paid full price, but there was a major Kindle deal one day and it was pretty cheap.
